Game of Thrones Locations
Every Castle, City, Keep & Landmark โ Where They Stand, What Happened There, and Who Rules Them Now
Game of Thrones is set across two continents โ Westeros and Essos โ containing over 100 named locations. The most significant are King’s Landing (capital of the Seven Kingdoms, population ~500,000), Winterfell (seat of House Stark, ~8,000 years old), Dragonstone (Targaryen fortress, built on a dragonglass deposit), The Wall (700-foot ice fortification, 300 miles wide), and Braavos (the wealthiest of the Nine Free Cities of Essos). Most were filmed on location across Northern Ireland, Croatia, Spain, and Iceland.
The Six Locations That Defined the Series
Every war began or ended at one of these six places. Start here before exploring by region.
King’s Landing
Capital of the Seven Kingdoms ยท Seat of the Iron ThroneFounded by Aegon I Targaryen at the mouth of Blackwater Bay, King’s Landing grew from a military encampment to the largest city in Westeros โ population ~500,000. Home of the Red Keep, the Iron Throne, and more political backstabbing per square mile than anywhere on the continent. Largely destroyed by Daenerys in S8E5.
Winterfell
Seat of House Stark ยท Ancient Capital of the NorthThe oldest inhabited castle in the known world โ built by Bran the Builder ~8,000 years ago. Warmed by hot springs beneath its foundations. Taken by Theon, retaken by the Boltons, liberated at the Battle of the Bastards, and site of the final stand against the Night King.
Dragonstone
Targaryen Ancestral Seat ยท Dragonglass DepositVolcanic island fortress where Daenerys was born and from where she launched her invasion of Westeros. The entire island sits atop the largest known dragonglass deposit in the world โ the material that kills White Walkers โ mined in S7.
The Wall & Castle Black
700-Foot Ice Barrier ยท Night’s Watch GarrisonBuilt ~8,000 years ago by Bran the Builder using ancient magic. Stretches 300 miles east to west. Breached by the Night King’s undead dragon Viserion in the S7 finale at Eastwatch-by-the-Sea. Castle Black held by Eddison Tollett until the Battle of Winterfell.
The Eyrie
Impregnable Mountain Fortress ยท 20,000 Feet AltitudeThe seat of House Arryn, perched atop the Mountains of the Moon โ accessible only by foot in summer via a series of waycastles. Never successfully besieged or conquered. Notable for its Moon Door: a trapdoor floor that drops prisoners 600 feet to the rocks below.
Highgarden
Seat of House Tyrell ยท Jewel of the ReachThe most beautiful castle in Westeros โ gardens, roses, and rolling fertile land in every direction. Held for generations by the Tyrells until it fell to the Lannister army in Season 7, with Olenna Tyrell poisoned. Now seat of Lord Bronn of the Blackwater by royal decree.

The ~8,000-year-old seat of House Stark, warmed by underground hot springs. Site of the War of the Five Kings, the Battle of the Bastards, and the Battle of Winterfell.
House Stark StandingPrimary garrison of the Night’s Watch, at the only central passage through the Wall. Commanded by Jon Snow, later Eddison Tollett. Site of the Battle of Castle Black (S4).
Night’s Watch StandingSeat of House Bolton โ where Theon Greyjoy was held and tortured by Ramsay Bolton over multiple seasons. Home of the Flayed Man sigil. Bolton power ended at Winterfell S6.
House Bolton (extinct) ContestedThe largest city in the North, ruled by House Manderly. A key port for trade and the arrival of Davos Seaworth in S6, who recruited the Manderlys for Jon Snow’s cause.
House Manderly StandingThe easternmost garrison of the Night’s Watch, where the Wall meets the Bay of Seals. Breached by the Night King’s reanimated dragon Viserion in S7E7 โ the moment the Wall fell.
Night’s Watch Breached โ S7Built atop Aegon’s High Hill, the Red Keep is the royal palace of Westeros โ home of the Iron Throne, the Small Council chamber, the Tower of the Hand, and the dungeons beneath. Partially collapsed in S8E5.
Iron Throne Partially DestroyedThe holiest site of the Faith of the Seven in King’s Landing, atop Visenya’s Hill. Destroyed by Cersei Lannister’s wildfire explosion in S6E10, killing the High Sparrow, Margaery, Loras, Mace Tyrell, and hundreds more.
Faith of the Seven Destroyed โ S6E10Volcanic island at the mouth of Blackwater Bay. Base of operations for Daenerys in S7โS8. Sits atop world’s largest dragonglass deposit. Filmed at Gaztelugatxe, Basque Country, Spain.
Targaryen โ Stannis โ Daenerys StandingAn ancient fortress carved into a massive sea cliff, sitting above the gold mines that funded Lannister dominance. Captured by the Unsullied in S7 โ which Tyrion engineered via the sewers he himself designed. The gold mines had run dry.
House Lannister StandingThe most beautiful castle in Westeros, with tiered gardens and rolling fertile land. Taken by the Lannisters in S7. Olenna Tyrell accepted her own poisoning there, getting in the last word about killing Joffrey.
Tyrell โ Bronn StandingThe oldest continuously inhabited city in Westeros, home of the Citadel where maesters are trained. Ruled by House Hightower. Samwell Tarly trains here in S6โS7, discovering the dragonglass at Dragonstone and Jon’s true parentage in the records.
House Hightower StandingBuilt by Durran Godsgrief 7,000 years ago on a cliff over the Shipbreaker Bay. Its magically reinforced walls have withstood storms that destroyed every other structure in the region. Given to Gendry by Daenerys in S8.
Baratheon โ Gendry StandingAt ~20,000 feet elevation, accessible only on foot via waycastles in summer. Features sky cells (open-air cage prisons tilting toward the void) and the Moon Door execution trap door. Never breached in recorded history.
House Arryn StandingSeat of House Tully, built on a triangle of land where two rivers meet. Can be flooded as a defensive moat. Besieged in S6, with Jaime Lannister forcing Edmure Tully to surrender it in one of the show’s most morally complex moments.
House Tully โ Frey โ Tully StandingTwin castles connected by a bridge over the Green Fork โ the only crossing in the Riverlands. Site of the Red Wedding massacre in S3E9. Later systematically depopulated by Arya Stark in S7E1 using the faces of the Faceless Men.
House Frey (extinct) ContestedThe seat of House Martell on the shores of the Summer Sea. Contains the Old Palace, the Tower of the Sun, and the Spear Tower. Ruled by Doran Martell until his assassination by Ellaria Sand in S6E1.
House Martell Uncertain after S6Built by Daeron II Targaryen as a gift to his Dornish bride. A tiered pink marble palace with pools fed by a river โ where children of nobles and servants play together regardless of birth. Doran Martell’s preferred seat.
House Martell StandingBuilt across sea stacks connected by rope bridges, with towers perched over crashing waves. The castle is perpetually battered by ocean spray. Seat of the Kingsmoot where Euron Greyjoy seized power from Yara and Theon in S6.
House Greyjoy StandingThe wealthiest and most powerful of the Nine Free Cities, founded by escaped slaves from Valyria. Home of the Iron Bank (financier of kingdoms) and the House of Black and White (Faceless Men). Arya trains here in S5โS6.
Independent Republic StandingThe largest of the three cities of Slaver’s Bay, ruled by Daenerys for three seasons while she learned to govern before returning to Westeros. Site of the Sons of the Harpy insurgency and the Great Masters’ siege.
Daenerys โ Grey Worm (briefly) StandingWhere Daenerys and Viserys Targaryen lived in exile under the protection of Magister Illyrio Mopatis. The city where Daenerys’s journey began โ she was given to Khal Drogo in an arranged marriage here in S1E1.
Independent Republic StandingThe only permanent city of the Dothraki people โ a city of no walls where no blood may be shed and no weapons drawn. The Dosh Khaleen (widows of dead khals) live here. Daenerys burns the Khals here in S6 to unite the khalasars.
Dothraki (no house) StandingA Wildling settlement beyond the Wall where the Night King slaughtered thousands and raised them as wights in S5E8 โ the most terrifying single scene in the series. Jon Snow witnessed the Night King raise the dead with a gesture from the shore.
Free Folk (destroyed) Destroyed โ S5E8The wealthiest city in the east, ruled by the merchant council the Thirteen. Daenerys seeks refuge and support here in S2, before the warlock Pyat Pree steals her dragons and she burns the House of the Undying to retrieve them.
