Game of Thrones Battles
Every Major Battle β Commanders, Casualties, Outcome & Why It Changed the War
Game of Thrones features over 20 named battles across 8 seasons, spread across five distinct conflicts: the War of Five Kings, the Battle for the Wall, the Wars of Slaver’s Bay, the Great War against the dead, and the War for Westeros. The defining battles are the Battle of the Blackwater (S2), Battle of Castle Black (S4), Battle of the Bastards (S6), and the Battle of Winterfell (S8) β each a landmark in both narrative and production history. Only two things are proven to kill White Walkers in any battle: Valyrian steel and dragonglass.
The 5 Battles That Defined the Series
Every war has its pivot point β these are the battles that broke kings and made legends.
Stannis Baratheon’s massive fleet sailed up Blackwater Bay to seize King’s Landing. Tyrion Lannister deployed a wildfire chain that ignited Stannis’s fleet in a single catastrophic explosion. Despite Stannis breaking through with his remaining troops, Tywin Lannister arrived at dawn with LannisterβTyrell reinforcements, routing the attackers. Tyrion was nearly killed by a Kingsguard assassination attempt during the battle.
Mance Rayder’s wildling army of one hundred thousand attacked the Wall from both sides simultaneously β below from the south, and beyond from the north. Jon Snow commanded the Wall’s defense with fewer than 100 men. The Night’s Watch held through the night at enormous cost. The battle was resolved the next morning when Stannis Baratheon arrived with his cavalry, routing the wildling force and capturing Mance Rayder.
Jon Snow’s combined force β wildlings, Stark loyalists, and House Mormont β faced Ramsay Bolton’s larger, more disciplined army outside Winterfell. Jon’s forces were drawn into a pike encirclement and nearly annihilated before Sansa Stark arrived with Petyr Baelish and the Knights of the Vale. Ramsay fled to Winterfell, which Wun Wun’s giant body broke open. Jon defeated Ramsay in single combat. Sansa executed him by feeding him to his own hounds.
The largest battle in the series β the combined forces of the living (Unsullied, Dothraki, Free Folk, Northerners, Knights of the Vale, and two dragons) against the Night King’s army of hundreds of thousands of wights. The Dothraki were annihilated in seconds. Dragon fire could not kill the Night King. Arya Stark, arriving from the shadows, drove the catspaw Valyrian steel dagger through the Night King, shattering him and destroying every wight instantly.
Daenerys Targaryen’s final assault on King’s Landing. Drogon first destroyed Euron’s Iron Fleet and the city’s scorpion defenses, then breached the city walls. The city’s bells rang to signal surrender β but Daenerys continued, incinerating the city’s streets, civilians, and soldiers alike. Cersei Lannister and Jaime died beneath the Red Keep as it collapsed. The battle is considered a war crime within the narrative, and directly led to Jon Snow killing Daenerys in the finale.

But on a battlefield, only steel, dragon fire, and obsidian decide the outcome.
