The ~8,000-year-old seat of House Stark, warmed by underground hot springs. Site of the War of the Five Kings, the Battle of the Bastards, and the Battle of Winterfell.

Primary garrison of the Night’s Watch, at the only central passage through the Wall. Commanded by Jon Snow, later Eddison Tollett. Site of the Battle of Castle Black (S4).

Seat of House Bolton — where Theon Greyjoy was held and tortured by Ramsay Bolton over multiple seasons. Home of the Flayed Man sigil. Bolton power ended at Winterfell S6.

The largest city in the North, ruled by House Manderly. A key port for trade and the arrival of Davos Seaworth in S6, who recruited the Manderlys for Jon Snow’s cause.

The easternmost garrison of the Night’s Watch, where the Wall meets the Bay of Seals. Breached by the Night King’s reanimated dragon Viserion in S7E7 — the moment the Wall fell.

Built atop Aegon’s High Hill, the Red Keep is the royal palace of Westeros — home of the Iron Throne, the Small Council chamber, the Tower of the Hand, and the dungeons beneath. Partially collapsed in S8E5.

The holiest site of the Faith of the Seven in King’s Landing, atop Visenya’s Hill. Destroyed by Cersei Lannister’s wildfire explosion in S6E10, killing the High Sparrow, Margaery, Loras, Mace Tyrell, and hundreds more.

Volcanic island at the mouth of Blackwater Bay. Base of operations for Daenerys in S7–S8. Sits atop world’s largest dragonglass deposit. Filmed at Gaztelugatxe, Basque Country, Spain.

An ancient fortress carved into a massive sea cliff, sitting above the gold mines that funded Lannister dominance. Captured by the Unsullied in S7 — which Tyrion engineered via the sewers he himself designed. The gold mines had run dry.

The most beautiful castle in Westeros, with tiered gardens and rolling fertile land. Taken by the Lannisters in S7. Olenna Tyrell accepted her own poisoning there, getting in the last word about killing Joffrey.

The oldest continuously inhabited city in Westeros, home of the Citadel where maesters are trained. Ruled by House Hightower. Samwell Tarly trains here in S6–S7, discovering the dragonglass at Dragonstone and Jon’s true parentage in the records.

Built by Durran Godsgrief 7,000 years ago on a cliff over the Shipbreaker Bay. Its magically reinforced walls have withstood storms that destroyed every other structure in the region. Given to Gendry by Daenerys in S8.

At ~20,000 feet elevation, accessible only on foot via waycastles in summer. Features sky cells (open-air cage prisons tilting toward the void) and the Moon Door execution trap door. Never breached in recorded history.

Seat of House Tully, built on a triangle of land where two rivers meet. Can be flooded as a defensive moat. Besieged in S6, with Jaime Lannister forcing Edmure Tully to surrender it in one of the show’s most morally complex moments.

Twin castles connected by a bridge over the Green Fork — the only crossing in the Riverlands. Site of the Red Wedding massacre in S3E9. Later systematically depopulated by Arya Stark in S7E1 using the faces of the Faceless Men.

The seat of House Martell on the shores of the Summer Sea. Contains the Old Palace, the Tower of the Sun, and the Spear Tower. Ruled by Doran Martell until his assassination by Ellaria Sand in S6E1.

Built by Daeron II Targaryen as a gift to his Dornish bride. A tiered pink marble palace with pools fed by a river — where children of nobles and servants play together regardless of birth. Doran Martell’s preferred seat.

Built across sea stacks connected by rope bridges, with towers perched over crashing waves. The castle is perpetually battered by ocean spray. Seat of the Kingsmoot where Euron Greyjoy seized power from Yara and Theon in S6.

The wealthiest and most powerful of the Nine Free Cities, founded by escaped slaves from Valyria. Home of the Iron Bank (financier of kingdoms) and the House of Black and White (Faceless Men). Arya trains here in S5–S6.

The largest of the three cities of Slaver’s Bay, ruled by Daenerys for three seasons while she learned to govern before returning to Westeros. Site of the Sons of the Harpy insurgency and the Great Masters’ siege.

Where Daenerys and Viserys Targaryen lived in exile under the protection of Magister Illyrio Mopatis. The city where Daenerys’s journey began — she was given to Khal Drogo in an arranged marriage here in S1E1.

The only permanent city of the Dothraki people — a city of no walls where no blood may be shed and no weapons drawn. The Dosh Khaleen (widows of dead khals) live here. Daenerys burns the Khals here in S6 to unite the khalasars.

A Wildling settlement beyond the Wall where the Night King slaughtered thousands and raised them as wights in S5E8 — the most terrifying single scene in the series. Jon Snow witnessed the Night King raise the dead with a gesture from the shore.

The wealthiest city in the east, ruled by the merchant council the Thirteen. Daenerys seeks refuge and support here in S2, before the warlock Pyat Pree steals her dragons and she burns the House of the Undying to retrieve them.
