The Essos Map
The complete map of the eastern continent — from the Free Cities and the Dothraki Sea to Slaver’s Bay, Qarth, Yi Ti, Asshai, and the ruined lands of Valyria
Essos is the vast eastern continent in Game of Thrones and A Song of Ice and Fire. Located across the Narrow Sea from Westeros, it contains the Free Cities, the Dothraki Sea, Slaver’s Bay, Qarth, Yi Ti, Asshai, and the ruins of Valyria. Most of Daenerys Targaryen’s rise takes place in Essos, making it the second major story continent after Westeros.
What Is Essos?
Essos is broader, older, and more culturally varied than Westeros — a continent of merchants, horse-lords, slave empires, dragon ruins, and eastern mysteries.
Essos is the eastern continent of the known world and one of the most important settings in the larger lore of A Song of Ice and Fire. While Westeros dominates the dynastic wars of the HBO series, Essos provides the world’s greatest scale — stretching far beyond the areas most viewers ever see onscreen.
Its western edge is lined by the Free Cities, wealthy independent city-states such as Braavos, Pentos, Volantis, Myr, Lys, Tyrosh, Norvos, Qohor, and Lorath. These cities trade, scheme, finance wars, and connect Essos to Westeros through the Narrow Sea.
Further inland lies the Dothraki Sea, an enormous grassland ruled by nomadic horse-lords, and south of it sit the slaving cities of Astapor, Yunkai, and Meereen in Slaver’s Bay. Still farther east are places that feel closer to legend than cartography — Qarth, Yi Ti, Asshai, the Shadow Lands, and the edge of the map itself.
